PROJECT COORDInATOR - BESAR BERSIH

Tengah Island Conservation (TIC) is pleased to announce one job opening for a Project Coordinator - Besar Bersih within our team to work with local communities in Mersing and the Johor Islands.

This paid position is open to Malaysian citizens and permanent residents only.

The organisation believes that communities are key stakeholders as users and beneficiaries of ecosystem services. We are looking for an enthusiastic self-starter passionate about building community capacity and identifying opportunities for adding value to products and services derived from the ecosystem, such as ecotourism. The candidate is essentially responsible for working strategically with all relevant communities, to ensure the effective implementation of our island waste management and sustainable tourism project.

The Project Coordinators will be based at our project site on Pulau Besar, though the position may entail frequent travel to Mersing and other Johor Islands. The candidate should be willing to work on a small island for one year (with the possibility of an extension). This position is to start immediately and will report to the Community & Environmental Awareness Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day operations of the on-site Recycling Centre and systems, and Eco-Education Centre.

  • Organising food and recycling collection, management, and send-off with local communities and resorts.

  • Coordinating and delivering engaging activities and workshops for communities, resorts, and tourists at the Eco-Education Centre on a regular schedule.

  • Manage the on-site organic food garden and composting systems.

  • Responsible for mobilizing, activating and strengthening community groups to design, manage and sustain project initiatives on Pulau Besar.

  • To work in close partnership and collaboration with the other Project Coordinator and Local Waste Collectors to involve local communities in waste management initiatives and sustainable tourism programmes on Pulau Besar.

  • Develop, lead and manage the delivery of innovative, sustainable and best-practice community engagement project initiatives, on Pulau Besar and other areas of Mersing, aligned with the organisation’s objectives.

  • Facilitate planning sessions, capacity building and field-based activities.

  • Follow monitoring and evaluation framework for community projects. Assess implementation progress regularly, identify barriers and constraints, and work collaboratively with teams to devise solutions.

  • Responsible for the timely submission of project updates and reports to the Community & Environmental Awareness Manager.

  • Support the community & Environmental Awareness Manager. in the development and implementation of environmental education programmes for Mersing, island communities and tourism operators. 

  • Assist with the management of social media accounts and graphical content creations, ensuring it is in line with the organisation’s communication and marketing strategy - communicating effectively to specialist and non-specialist groups.

Minimum Requirements:

•  Degree or relevant experience in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Permaculture, Biological and/or Social Sciences.

•  Previous experience in sustainable development and/or environmental projects is highly desired.

•  Ability to work cooperatively and constructively within small local communities, including operational hands-on capacity in community-based settings.

•  Excellent organisation, time and project management skills, including the ability to plan, implement and execute new initiatives with the demonstrated ability to think creatively to innovate.

•  Excellent communication, influencing and interpersonal skills, including a proven ability to work as part of a team and independently.

•  Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy.

•  Fluency in written and spoken Bahasa and English is essential.

•  Friendly, outgoing, enthusiastic, and passionate about nature and conservation

•  Ability to work on a small isolated island with limited resources.

 • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office.
